Question: How do I sign up?
Fill out this online survey and we'll place you in the next round of interactive performances when it starts. If you have any questions, just email us at SausalitoElectricTheatre (at) gmail-dot-com. (Yes, we spelled "Theatre" the British way in our email address -- too much Monty Python in the home when we were kids.) A human being will read your survey answers and any email.
Question: How much of my time will it take, and for how long?
You can feel involved in the story by checking in online for a few minutes two or three times a week, You choose the times -- major story lines will not have tight deadlines.
Some people will want to get more involved. We've prepared a lot of different story angles to explore.
We expect the first run of this interactive experience to take about four weeks, starting in June, 2010.
Question: How much does it cost to take part?
It's free. We accept donations for our authors and actors, but you're not obligated and we won't keep bringing it up. What we want most of all is your involvement.
Question: What is an "Interactive Play"?
An Interactive Play takes place on the Internet. The characters will be going through a key moment in their lives, and the audience both shares that moment and participates in it.
You'll portray a friend of one of the characters, interacting via email, Facebook, Twitter -- only the methods you normally use online. Your "friend" in the play is a fictional character being portrayed by an actor, but they will write to you as if the events going on are real.
If you ignore the character, the script will follow its preordained course. In "The Koi Pond" two characters may die in the weeks that make up the story.
But you're involved, you're trying to help. Everything still might be OK.
Question: What is the story about in The Koi Pond?
A family of four living in Sausalito has some problems with their house. The family's routine changes. The repairs drag on in a nightmare of dripping water and drywall dust. The contractors raise their bids.
The line between the routine and the extreme can be a subtle one. It's summer, and the teens are looking for fun. A new job comes with surprises, some of them frightening. One person makes a bad decision, another says something they regret.
Within a few weeks two people may be dead.
It doesn't have to go down like this. You can change the outcome. You are both Audience and Actor.
Question: You say that a fictional character could be in terrible trouble, even die. How do you keep from panicking people into thinking these events are real?
We've worked on this problem a lot. All emails will include clear explanations, and tweets will carry a special "hash code" that people can check to see that it's an online story.
Question: Do I get to choose which character will be my friend in the story?
Yes, when you sign up we'll send you a short questionnaire to match you to the right character. You can skip any question you don't want to answer and still participate.
Question: Do I ever have to come anywhere in person?
No. For local residents we plan to have at least one event that people can attend, but it is optional and you can play a major role in the story without attending any gathering.

Yes, we did sneak that question in twice.
